Who we are

The Bucharest – Ilfov Intercommunity Development Association for Public Transport (Asociația de Dezvoltare Intercomunitară pentru Transport Public București-Ilfov) – TPBI was established at the end of 2017 as an association of all 42 local authorities within Bucharest-Ilfov Region (Bucharest City, Ilfov County Council, 8 cities and 32 communes from Ilfov County).

About us

TPBI received a mandate from their 42 members for the establishment, organization, regulation, operation, monitoring and management of the public transport service throughout the area of competence, according to EC Regulation 1370/2007.

Our mission

TPBI manages the entire public surface transport service in the region, while rail, including the metro, is under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

Our challenge

In Bucharest-Ilfov region, there are 193 local public surface transport lines, of which 126 are urban lines, operated by buses, trams and trolleybuses, and 65 are regional lines, operated by buses. Thus, TPBI provides public transport throughout the Bucharest-Ilfov Region for over 2.2 million inhabitants on an area of 1,821 km2, of which 13.1% represents the administrative territory of the Romanian Capital.

Our Projects

The activities of TPBI play a vital role in the development and implementation of various projects aimed at enhancing the public transport system in the Bucharest Ilfov region. Our association actively engages in the planning and execution of key initiatives that contribute to the improvement of transport infrastructure, efficiency and sustainability.

In order to permanently adapt projects to citizens’ needs and continuous development of the region, TPBI and Bucharest City Hall initiated the process for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan update and this involves public consultations with all local authorities in the region, but also NGOs and citizens.

One of the notable projects undertaken by TPBI is the introduction of Metropolitan Train services, which focuses on establishing a reliable and efficient train network connecting different areas within the region. This project aims to provide commuters with an accessible and environmentally friendly alternative for their daily transport needs.

Another significant project is the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) – Passenger information in public transport stops, to enhance passenger experience and information accessibility. Through the integration of advanced technologies, such as digital displays and real-time updates, TPBI ensures that passengers have access to accurate and up-to-date information regarding schedules, delays, and other essential details.

Our association also oversees the implementation of the Bucharest Traffic Management System (BTMS), which aims to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city. By using intelligent traffic management solutions and advanced monitoring systems, TPBI strives to create a more efficient and sustainable urban transport network.

Furthermore, we are actively seeking European funding in order to renew the public transport vehicle fleet, emphasizing the adoption of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient vehicles. By introducing modern and sustainable transport options, TPBI aims to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a cleaner and greener urban environment.

TPBI remains committed to developing innovative and impactful projects that address the evolving needs of the Bucharest – Ilfov region.
